Triptych made as a part of the TV theme programme Africa, the rediscovery. In part one filmmakers Fred van Dijk en Anil Ramdas follow in the tracks of the adventurers and scientists who explored Africa in the nineteenth century. They investigate how these travellers looked upon this unknown world with their European eyes. In the second part British scientist Basil Davidson puts the stories about these explorers in a historical perspective. His argument deals amongst others with the fact that many writers, misinterpreting Darwins theories successfully preached the superiority of the white race. In part three Gore Vidal discusses the influence of the well-known Tarzan stories on the perception of Africa.
