In collaboration with director Pieter Verhoeff, Jean van der Velde based the script for this feature film on Marijke Höweler's book. Incorporating a whole series of subplots, the film follows, from one Christmas to the next, the occupants of a typical Amsterdam upstairs flat in a working-class neighbourhood. Two adventurous students, an unemployed bricklayer, a bachelor, his demented mother and a failed singer with her boyfriend, dog and two daughters are all in pursuit of a chunk of happiness, which leads to humorous as well as tragic situations. The film was awarded three Golden Calves.
