If Twelve Years a Slave were a music video, it would look like this indictment by Typhoon. Harrowing and perhaps shocking, but also an unmistakeable and resounding statement.
Poetical and contemporary rap lyrics, supported by intense images of social abuse in the past. We zijn er is an indictment of a black page in colonial history, featuring rapper Typhoon as a slave who is given a good whipping by his white owner. The closing shot is very powerful: the image of the rebellious slave who seizes the whip fades into the rapper on stage, raising his microphone in his clenched fist. The video was shot on location in Cape Verde, at the time a pivot in the international slave trade.
