Two separated parents have lost grip of their seventeen-year-old son, who is going through an adolescence crisis. He turns his back on the outside world and withdraws in impenetrable silence. Unable to make contact with him, his father and mother meanwhile lose themselves in hurting each other and raking up old frustrations. They say a lot, but hardly listen. Tussenstand (Stages) is a meticulously structured, hermetical film full of contrast that rests on a torrent of words and the deafening silence in between. The series of emotional conversations the parents have in hip urban establishments with each other and their friends and colleagues are alternated with the son's self-elected isolation in the sterile apartment he shares with his mother. The camera registers with distant shots and hard close-ups, in which the actors can fully display their qualities as character actors.
