During World War I, both Allied and German frontline troops try to dig tunnels in an attempt to blow up the opponent's trenches. During an unsuccessful effort to dig a tunnel under no man's land, John Atkins gets stuck with a German soldier. They are confronted with each other, but also with their common enemy, the war itself.
