Thirty years ago, garden suburbs were built around Amsterdam to lighten the burden on old suburbs in the centre. That happened in line with the urban planning and social norms at that time. There is also a role for garden suburbs in the next century, if they are adapted with the aid of present-day scientific and technological knowledge.
