Three Cuban transgenders in a paradox-ridden country. While the state annually sponsors five sex reassignment surgeries, they still contend with old problems like sexism, poverty and prostitution.
Is Cuba turning into a paradise for transgenders? Once a year, a Dutch and a Flemish plastic surgeon fly to Havana to operate on five Cuban transgenders. Mariela Castro, the president’s daughter, launched a public programme for transgender care as an addition to the revolution of 1959. Meanwhile, the transgenders Odette, Juani and Malú may be the 'new heroes', but they are still contending with old problems, like discrimination, sexism, poverty and prostitution. The paradoxes of an island that is in transition itself.
