A brilliant personality, surrounded by gorgeous women. A master in the art of living and a magnanimous man. A fine racecar driver and a charming crook. This is how in De eik leek geveld his friends describe Tonio Hildebrand, who scored triumphs as a race-driver in the fifties and sixties, especially on the Zandvoort track. He led a flamboyant life and generously shared what he had with friends like journalist Henk Hofland, artist Frans Pannekoek, actor Rijk de Gooyer, Maarten Spanjer, Peter van Straaten and his old friend Hein ten Harmsen van der Beek. In the eighties, his liberal life style resulted in a tax debt of around two million guilders, an escape to Belgium and eventually six months in a Dutch prison cell. In 2003, Hildebrand sits in a wheelchair, but still shamelessly enjoys life - with his wife Carla in the extended limousine. The interviews with friends, peppered with hilarious anecdotes, are interlaced with black-and-white archive footage and typical cigar-smoke-veiled comments by Hildebrand himself.
