In his own words, 'a little like Tati', Van der Keuken captures a small part of Amsterdam's Albert Cuypstraat market in Fotostudio To Sang as a village community in which several inhabitants and shopkeepers are photographed by Mr To Sang, the Chinese photographer who lives at its heart. He hardly speaks any Dutch, but he has his own (body) language to communicate with his models. Minor stories are also set behind the windows of the (largely foreign) shops of immigration, oppression, hard work and happiness. See also: Leven met je ogen (1997).
