Profound and impressive directing debut by Russian filmmaker Andrei Zvyagintsev, in which a father returns home to his wife and two young sons after a twelve-year absence and takes the boys on a supposedly enjoyable fishing trip to a desert island.

In contemporary Russia, young brothers Vanya and Andrey have grown deeply attached to each other to make up for their fatherless childhood. Running home after a fight with neighbourhood kids, the boys are shocked to discover their father has returned after a twelve-year absence. With their mother's uneasy blessing, Vanya and Andrey set out on what they believe will be a fishing vacation with their taciturn father. Their destination is a mysterious island. One of the ten films selected by Guest of the Year Frans van Gestel.
