In the hands of movie director Diede in 't Veld, the feature film version of the successful youth series Spangas is an action movie in which pupils spend a survival week in the Ardennes, but also learn some lessons for life. Like in the TV series, the film features a group of friends from the Spangalis College. When they gather in front of the school building, the band of friends is introduced in a strikingly long opening shot. In the same breath, the film introduces themes like leaving school, homosexuality, homesickness and infatuation. And a nervous English teacher in a suit is not too eager to sleep in a tent for a week. After this opening, we are swept along to the Belgian woods, where the teenagers, after a miscarried drop and an escalating row between two twin brothers, have to throw all differences aside to pull through the adventure unharmed.
