Kristel Lodema, a paranormally gifted student of journalism, goes to an old Belgian coalmine with a group of friends to pick up the manuscript of her father, who has just been killed in a car accident. After a guided tour in the mine, the elevator jams and the group is stuck inside the dark mine labyrinth. Out of boredom and under the influence of XTC, they use Kristel's father's Oija board to try and evoke the spirit of an old 'fireman'. Once upon a time, condemned men were sent into the mines with a burning torch to find and explode mine gas: the so-called firemen. Andries Martiens, the serial killer that Kristel's father was investigating soon before he died, was also a fireman. Legend has it that his spirit still haunts the mine.
