In Dick Maas’ version, St. Nicholas is not saintly but diabolical. Dutch horror inventor treats us to goose pimples, cool action and a wink.
With Sint, Dick Maas revisits the Dutch horror genre he personally kick-started in 1983 with De lift. It is at the same time a cinematic reunion with his once regular star Huub Stapel, who this time doesn’t get (or need) many lines to render a ghastly version of St. Nicholas. In his horror comedy, Maas makes short work of the politically correct ideas around the children’s friend. His St. Niklas spread death and destruction in the Middle Ages with his gang of robbers, and now rises from the dead every full moon on 5 December to resume his terror. Schoolboy Frank barely manages to survive an encounter with the zombie bishop. The rest of his circle of friends is not so fortunate. The police do not believe St. Nicholas stories and considers Frank the main suspect. An unalloyed Maas production with a spectacular chase on Amsterdam roofs, which as far as production value goes can easily compete with Hollywood blockbusters.
