Magical tale set in 19th Century Central Europe. Beleiving him to be possessed by the devil, Simon's fellow villagers taunt and persecute him. The community is in a state of crisis; all the through-trade has been taken away by the newly constructed railroad. Hase, a ruthless merchant, wants to build a railway station that will safeguard their future. Hase involves Simon into his bad plans and in doing so places everyone's future in de bewildered young man's hands. Major role played by Rutger Hauer.
