This feature sketches the moving and tragic life of Rembrandt van Rijn (played by the English actor Charles Laughton). From his successful start as a painter, his great love Saskia, her death and the following relationships with his housekeeper Geertje and later Hendrickje. The loss of his affluent clients eventually left him isolated.
