Second full-length feature film by self-willed filmmaker Adriaan Ditvoorst was based on W.F. Hermans' novella of the same name. Ex-soldier Arnold suffers from paranoia. He thinks he is an SS officer who has gone underground and whose description has been published by the newspapers. Driven by despair, Arnold commits two murders before taking his own life. Paranoia is characterised by a sparing use of dialogue, poignant scenes and a frightening atmosphere. Camera work by Jan de Bont, who later directed among others Speed and The Haunting.
