Film adaptation of the classic play of the same name from 1900 by Herman Heijermans. The young Barend refuses to risk his life any longer on a ship that is hardly seaworthy. The unscrupulous ship owner refuses to spend a penny on repairs. With his brother, who has just been released from jail, Barend is sent to sea one more time by his mother Knier, in spite of everything. She discovers the fish is direly paid for.
