Behind the shipshape backdrop of a suburban district, something dark lies hidden, the Polish au pair Ewa suspects. Her host family does not know what to do with this reticent, timid girl.

A Dutch couple with a second baby on the way takes on the Polish au pair Ewa. The language barrier in combination with her introverted character quickly makes the subdued tensions in the family mount. The little son is mad about her, but what is this reticent girl so absorbed with? Via two changes of perspective, the audience sees the events, apart from the family’s perspective, from those of Ewa and an au pair friend, who is her complete opposite. Atypically, this effect is not used as a trick to raise the tension, because despite the thriller element, Onder ons is primarily a drama exploring human relationships and poor communication against an ordered suburban backdrop. The script by Van Geffen and Jolein Laarman was nominated for the International Filmmakers Award 2009 at the Sundance Film Festival. The film was made as the first part of a thematic trilogy on the cornerstone of society. The sequel will be Geen Naam by the same scriptwriting duo.
