This feature film tells the tragic love story of the famous writer of children's books Sjoukje Bokma de Boer, pen name Nynke van Hichtum, who spent half her life trying to come out of the shadows of her husband, statesman Pieter Jelles Troelstra. In Troelstra, Sjoukje seems to have found the ideal husband. Like her, he likes literature, poetry and the Friesian culture, and he considers her his equal. But things change drastically when Troelstra falls under the spell of socialism and forces Sjoukje into the classical role of mother and housewife. A period of isolation and later a nervous breakdown follow. Even when Sjoukje picks up her writing and publishes her famous children's book Afke's tiental, the end of her plight is not yet in sight.
