Using the age-old formula 'spray and pray', American cotton farmers are not making much progress in their equally old struggle against the cotton moth. These voracious beasts have become resistant to all pesticides and still like the taste of cotton plants. Building in genes that make the plants poisonous to the caterpillars will only be successful for a short period, according to evolutionary biologists. So ecologists hit on a ruse to slow the development of resistance by a factor of between ten and fifty times.
