In intimate film, filmmakers Peter Lataster and Petra Lataster-Czisch document the final year in the marriage of Lataster’s parents. After 65 years together, the elderly couple feels the life they took for granted slowly crumble.

Hermine van Hall potters about in the sunny garden, enjoying the greenery and the birds. Ger Lataster, her husband, melancholically watches the love of his life from the house. The elderly couple feels the life they used to take for granted slowly crumble. Old age, Ger’s deafness and Hermine’s dementia progressively weigh on their daily life. In this intimate documentary, filmmakers Peter Lataster and Petra Lataster-Czisch - the couple’s son and daughter-in-law - capture the final year of a marriage that lasted for 65 years. They take their time for scenes in which the old couple wakes up, for daily rituals in and around the house and for sometimes self-evident, sometimes intense moments together. The old artist and his photographer wife accept the camera as something natural. In the process, the spectator shares their finer moments, when they enjoy art and each other, as well as sadder times. The deeply personal Niet zonder jou is heart-warming and heart-rending at the same time.
