Documentary about the declining years of the colonial regime in the Netherlands East Indies, visualised by the correspondence between a Dutch official on the spot and his wife in America. Stylised fiction scenes (played by Joanna Stevens, Harry Barrowslough, Dolf de Vries en Anne-Wil Blankers) alternate with authentic footage. New York - Batavia won the 1987 Golden Calf for Best Full-length Documentary.
