Director Cahen got permission to film in the Nashi ('Ours') summer camp, a Russian youth movement founded by Vladimir Putin. She filmed the ten thousand campers with several cameras and presents the result in two adjacent frames. The double images, which sometimes differ only slightly, sharpen the view and at the same time put the individualism of the Nashi members, who are drilled to become a new generation of national leaders, into perspective. Banners and loudspeakers proclaim the official creed, alcohol is prohibited and 'voluntary youth guards' guard against 'unnecessary passions'. While adolescents march in military uniform and learn to dismount weapons, one after the other interviewee states in the voice-over that Russia will be the world leader of the 21st century. If someone fumbles, he is immediately corrected: 'It wasn't according to the manifesto.' And yet the summer camp generally looks quite normal: strolling youngsters, an infatuated couple, boys with bared torsos, girls making their toilet.
