The plan to open a Chinese Buddhist temple in the Netherlands starts dynamically. But the project turns into a long search for what it means to be a real Buddhist.

The prominent Chinese Buddhist monastic order Putuo Shan is planning to open its first temple outside of China: in Utrecht. The mild-mannered and determined businessman Hu, the project’s initiator, is given the blessing by the abbot of Putuo. He starts energetically by collecting half a million euros for the construction and by inviting Chinese monks to advise him. The plan seems to unfold prosperously. But it turns out to be the beginning of a long search for what it means to be a real Buddhist.
