Rural drama based on Stijn Streuvels's novel De teleurgang van de Waterhoek. The conservative inhabitants of the village of Waterhoek fiercely oppose the construction of a bridge over the River Schelde. From the free and open-minded girl Mira (Willeke van Ammelrooy's first major role) they learn that progress cannot be stopped. Mira's cousin and lover (played by Jan Decleir) even finds this to his cost.
