Director Ineke Houtman and children’s book writer Sjoerd Kuyper know how to dish up adult problems to a youthful audience without dropping to their knees. Of course, Mijn opa de bankrover pays off the adventurous promise the title holds, but the story does not revolve around material gain, but around the warm ties between a teen girl and her grandpa. Both are delving into the past. Thirteen-year-old Grace - the only coloured member of the otherwise kaaskop family - considers herself old enough to know the ins and outs of her absent Suriname father, but she is turned away by everyone. Her grandpa is the only one prepared to help her with her search, but the widower is growing demented. When he is directed to the nursing home and his bank account is frozen, it calls for radical measures. Contemporary problems, but couched in a cheerful setting and a country and western feel and dished up with great pace.
