Personal document by filmmaker Tan in which she goes in search of the roots of her Indo-Chinese-Western family. She spoke to dozens of relatives spread over the whole world and tries to find out with them what makes up your (cultural) identity. What does it mean to be Chinese? And above all: what does it mean to be Chinese outside China? The title refers to an old Chinese curse that states you can better lead a calm and balanced life; interesting times are dangerous times; the overseas Chinese who include Tan and her family have known nothing but interesting times.
