After Selfportrait, a documentary about the famous South-African photographer Roger Ballen, director Saskia Vredeveld dove once more into his alienating universe. Teaming up, they made an experimental black-and-white film in an unusual square format, showing the personal tragedies of a group of individuals on the fringes of human life. In pointedly composed scenes, the battered faces and shabby surroundings contrast with some lily-white animals. This re-edited version of Memento Mori (2005) will be screened alongside The Asylum.
