Frans Bromet talks to three widows who were confronted with their husbands’ suicide. In a candid conversation, they look for the motives underlying this desperate act.
In 2016, the Netherlands numbered nearly 1900 suicides, the highest figure ever. And twice as many men as women. In the past, the women in this soberly shot documentary fell for their husbands’ characters. Over the years, they saw them change under the influence of external expectations, a sense of failure and the ensuing shame. But the wives never divined that this would lead to this irrevocable act. Why are men in this day and age so confused? There is no cut-and-dried answer to this question, but the women’s stories do point in a certain direction. Bromet made the film in cooperation with journalist Nathan Vos, who wrote the book Man o man after his brother’s suicide.
