The relationship between the near-centenarian Enny and her daughter Tascha is still dominated by the death of Enny’s first two daughters in Auschwitz. In a subtle portrait of his New York-based family, filmmaker Marco Niemeijer gradually unfolds the harrowing, suffocating effects of a war trauma across the generations. Even after Enny’s demise, the past keeps dictating Tascha’s life. As a viewer, meanwhile, it is not easy to take a position seeing the impotence of mother and daughter. After all, how should one relate to a victim who victimises others?
