Seven-part documentary series about the tear-jeker in different European countries. Lied van Verdriet (Sad Song) portrays singers who tell their own life stories in a sad song. From their local singing tradition, they sing about farewell, mother love, the loss of a loved one and lost ideals. In the part on Portugal we see fado singer Ruí Castro performing in fado restaurant Adega de Ribatejo in Lisbon and bringing a heart throbbing visit to his mother in rural Portugal.
