Slightly ironic drama about men and woman in their thirties and fourties in search of themselves and the art of life. The suicide of a thirty-year-old Amsterdam man brings commotion to the bland life of his nextdoor neighbour. The youth asks himself for the very first time what he is really living for. In his quest for his neighbour's motive, he falls in love with a woman who is restoring a rural hotel with her brother. He moves in with the couple and embarks on a stormy affair with the woman. However she already has a complex relationship with her brother and eventually shows him the door. Disappointed in love, the youth joins a friend and his artist friend on a holiday by a nearby factory chimney.
