In the uncertain period between hospital examination and results, Sophie tries several ways to keep it together. She walks the streets dazed, tries to suppress her tears and sometimes feels people are talking behind her back. She angrily rejects sympathy. Floating in the pool or sleeping beside her little son, she sees herself in the scanner again, as a body teeming with festering cells. She wants to be strong, but even the pleasure her child gives her cannot dispel her dark thoughts.
