St. Louis, 1933. The inventive Aaron is grounded at the Empire hotel where the residents are toughing out hard times. In Aaron's real world, his hopeless father peddles wickless candles door-to-door while awaiting word about a job, and his trusted mother suffers silently as sickness, like unpaid bills, begin to mount. When the family begins to break apart, Aaron's grand designs meet up with reality.
