Following the success of De schippers van de Kameleon, the top-ranking Dutch feature film in 2003, Steven de Jong once more revives the pranks of the Frisian twins Hielke and Sietse Klinkhamer (again played by Koen and Jos van der Donk). Kameleon 2 deals with materialism versus idealism, or the urban capitalists versus the placid villagers. In the film, the inhabitants of Lenten threaten to fall victim to a money-hungry real estate developer who wants to construct a highway and a residential area in the pastoral village. Lenten is in a state of commotion; many farms will have to yield to 'economic progress'. Sietse and Hielke are alarmed, but also busy taking care of their destitute new friend Marieke, who is in bed with asthma and needs a lot of money for her recovery. When Marieke's little house is in danger of being demolished, the twins try to put a stop to it in various ways. The Kameleon adaptations are based on the 63-volume children's book series by Hotze de Roos, the first episode of which was published in 1948.
