What is the role of the artist in times of economic crisis and shrinking subsidies? Erik van Lieshout examines this in the direct surroundings of his studio: the lower-class urban area Rotterdam-Zuid. In apparently spontaneous monologues, he expresses his horror at the ‘man in the street’ and wonders: Do I have a social task? Still, he has intimate conversations with these ordinary people in their living rooms and buys the entire collection of deceased collector Janus to turn it into an installation.
