There was sufficient archive footage of Jan Wolkers available to make a portrait, purely on this basis. His name was found 238 times in the archives of the Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid, of which 36 programmes were used for this thematically structured documentary. 'Finally on TV! It's been a week now,' Wolkers says in an excerpt. As 'the ideal guest', the writer, sculptor and painter was always prepared to deliver a snappy quote, answer trite questions ('Is it autobiographical?') or go 'back to Oestgeest' with a programme maker. If in his first TV appearance in 1963 he was still slightly intimidated, in the end Wolkers had most interviewers by the tail. In a few wittily edited scenes, we see how Wolkers regularly told the same story. Gradually, however, we get an idea not only of the media phenomenon, but also of the man Wolkers.
