When the kind-hearted single Lammert relishes a slice of cake, his fellow villagers consider it a capital offence. The veneer of solidarity turns out to be very thin.

The solidarity so convincingly extolled by the church choir in the Groningen village of Kropsdam turns out to be a lot thinner than the villagers pretend it to be. When the kind-hearted bachelor Lammert, on a windmill information evening, relishes a slice of windmill cake, his fellow villagers unanimous draw the conclusion: Lammert has chosen for the enemy. And in this vein they proceed to treat him.
