Feature based on the book by Lorenzo Mazzeti. Summer 1943. Penny (9) and her six-year-old sister have lost their parents and now live with their uncle and aunt in the tranquil countryside of Tuscany. Her uncle - a Jewish intellectual and cousin of Einstein, played by Jeroen Krabbé - school and friendship with the peasant children make life fun again. Their happiness is however overshadowed by the cruel war as it also overruns this family.
