Not much is said in the short documentary Howrah Station - Calcutta. Director Harrie Timmermans mainly points his camera at the continuous flow of passengers handled every day by Howrah Station, one of the busiest railway junctions in Asia. With a fixed camera, he registers feet walking down a staircase, heads in the hallway and a handicapped man, making his way across the crammed platform like a monkey on all fours. When Timmermans starts walking around, he captures routine actions, like buying a ticket, lowering the level-crossing barriers and cranking a telephone. The families living by the track look into the camera with astonished faces. The images keep flowing - just like the yellow taxicabs keep driving across the bridge, carrying new passengers to Howrah Station.
