Short films and newsreel excerpts, depicting extreme weather conditions in the Netherlands in the 1920s, from the vaults of the Institute for Image and Sound, accompanied live and designed by students from the Utrecht School of the Arts.

In the recurrent section featuring silent films, the festival this year presents a programme of films from the archives of the Dutch Institute for Image and Sound. Staff members of the Institute dug up short films and newsreel excerpts from the vaults that depict extreme weather conditions in the Netherlands in the 1920s. When rivers still froze over, car routes were laid out across the ice and icebreakers had to be deployed to keep the waterways open. When heavy storms created havoc and the combination of high water levels and weak dykes flooded large areas. But also when there were warm summers and people, in bathing suits that left little uncovered, happily enjoyed the sea and beach. Students from the Utrecht School of the Arts composed music for the screening and perform it live. The design and editing of the programme was carried out by students of the Media department of the HKU, who occasionally manipulated the old footage to such a degree that a completely new reality emerged.
