Documentary in which three mothers try to put into words how the suicide of their children has changed their own lives. In the Netherlands, 15,000 young people try to take their own lives every year. One percent succeeds. Roel van Dalen portrays three mothers who have lost a child in this way. In long interviews, they talk about their anger, sorrow, guilt and impotence. Het verlies van de toekomst confronts the viewer with their inexpressible suffering, but also shows their resiliance, the desperate courage with wich they tackle life and the ways they have found to make their loss bearable.
