Documentary about the history of the National Monument on Dam Square in Amsterdam.
When the National Monument was built on Dam Square in 1956, the City of Amsterdam promised to look after this national sign of remembrance 'until the end of time'. But in 1996 the monument turned out to be falling apart and had to be repaired - paradoxically - by a German company. The monument's restoration was reason for the filmmaker to make the documentary. That 'until the end of time' does not necessarily mean forever is apparent from the bad condition of the statue, but also from the changing views on continuing to remember historic events. Including archive footage that has never been seen before of the most filmed square in Holland, the film also looks at Dutch history. The arrival of the Germans in 1940, liberation in 1945; the departure of Dutch troops to the Dutch East Indies, accessions to the throne and the activities of the Provos in the sixties.
