After fifty years, the Russian doctor Nicolai Borodinski returns to the old and dilapidated hotel cum brothel where he once met his great love, the courtesan Elise. Their brief relationship was impossible, but undeniably made a lasting impression on the physician. The reason of his return becomes clear when past and present blend. The love tragedy takes place at the end of the nineteenth century, the belle époque, near the German 18th century castle Tannenfeld in Thüringen. This Dutch/German/Russian co-production is based on an original script by director Jos Stelling and Bert Rijkelijkhuizen, who were inspired by Pushkin, Chekhov and love stories form the poetic era, but also by concepts like Sehnsucht, farewell and finiteness.
