Documentary about the American composer John Cage from the series about contemporary composers made by Frank Scheffer for AVRO-tv. Earlier films in the series were on Stravinsky, Boulez and Schönberg. Like the previous films, From Zero - The Documentary is in two parts. Part two comprises a recording of a performance of Cage's composition Fourteen by Yves Ensemble. The first part includes shots of making the film about Fourteen juxtaposed with documentary material about John Cage. In cutting this part, Frank Scheffer made use of chance operations, as often used by Cage in his compositions.
