Impressions of canteens (or spaces that act as such), behind the scenes of companies and organisations. Stuffy and dimly lit, or modern and fresh. Always filmed from the same angle, with a fixed frame. The camera usually keeps some distance; sometimes we do not hear the conversation of the people sitting closest by, but at a table in the rear. Snippets of conversations merge. The subjects range from work and chili con carne (very good') to holidays. 'Has he cut his hair in layers?' 'I've got three sisters left.' 'You were born in Suriname, weren't you?' 'At home, I still hear that beep of the French fries.' Someone is smoking a cigarette by himself, ignoring the TV set in the background. Two men in suits talk about 'targets'. A group of men in work clothes play a game of cards. Coffee, a cigarette, canteen lunch from a plastic bag or from McDonald's. And then the break is over.
