The year is 1889. After the death of her elderly husband, a professor of archeology, the young Dutch widow Emilie travels to an Italian resort where she wants to find peace. Hugo, the assistant of her late husband, welcomes her. He has always been in love with Emilie but waits until the period of mourning is over and he can officially ask for her hand in marriage. However a young Italian officer, Aldo, is staying at the same hotel. Aldo is fascinated by Emilie's beauty and tries to break open her timid reticence. He seduces 'the young widow from the North' and tries to cure her lack of joy in life. Emilie falls for Aldo's advances until she gets to know him better.
