Portrait of eleven-year-old deaf and assertive Ellen who has to choose which secondary school she will go to. She prefers a regular school to a boarding school for deaf children.

Deaf eleven-year-old Ellen and her bosom friend Myrthe have to choose which secondary school they will go to: a boarding school for deaf children or a regular school? Or a school for hearing-impaired children? Ellen prefers a regular school. She will have to be able to speak then, and she may be very adept at sign language, but not at speech. Conversations with her family and in class alternate with scenes in the pool and during speech exercises.
