To the Troms, good food is a source of happiness. Sweet-smelling pastries, colourful popsicles, crunchy pizzas; the family of gourmets prepares and eats it with great relish. When they decide to move from snug Dikkedam to Dunhoven to run a restaurant there, their life takes a cheerless turn. Although they cook perfect food, their fine establishment stays frighteningly empty. The thing is, people in Dunhoven are not regaling in good food, but in working out and staying slim. For the first time, the jolly family feels different. Even their son Dik does. Will they manage to make their slender fellow-villagers eat, or will they have to turn to diet bars themselves? Fortunately, Dik Trom has an idea.
Although this cheery Dik Trom film was inspired by the children’s book hero conceived by author Cornelis Johannes Kieviet in 1907, it is not purely an adaptation. Filmmaker and commercial director Arne Toonen opted for a modern, gaudy adventure with a fifties look, giving the all-Dutch family film genre a refreshing twist.
