Jesus Christ said he was 'the son of the living God'. People have thoroughly searched for that God, but the living city is Groningen and Gerrit Krol can call himself its rightful son. 'The writer is conceited', Krol quotes himself, 'and if he is also talking about himself, he is conceited raised to the square.' Apparently, this is not the case with Krol. As a 'scientific calculator' for Shell, he travelled around half the world, which he considers a necessary therapy to shed his provincial prejudices. Krol, since a few years a fulltime writer, regards the many literary prizes that have been awarded to him as marginal phenomena. Working on a new book in Venice with his flamboyant wife Janna, he talks about his life and work. 'My way of writing is somewhat deviant,' Krol says. 'I write more like a filmmaker films.' Atmospheric images are accompanied by fragments from his work, recited in voice-over.
